Android Creator Is Making the “Essential” Smartphone Android之父自立門戶 打造Essential智慧型手機 The smartphone market would look much different today were it not for Andy Rubin. A visionary engineer knowing where the tech landscape is liable to shift, Rubin famously created the Android operating system. Since leaving Google in 2014, the mastermind behind the world’s most dominant OS has largely been out of the public eye. Essential is said to be a platform company designed to link multiple devices and work on a series of consumer hardware products for mobile and smart home markets. The highlight of these hardware efforts is a premium smartphone with an edge-to-edge display that lacks a surrounding bezel. 產業界消息來源指出，魯賓正準備宣佈成立一家名為Essential的新公司的消息，並出任該公司的CEO。Essential據稱是家平台公司，成立宗旨是要串接各式各樣的裝置，並針對手機及智慧家電市場，研發一系列消費硬體產品。這些消費硬體產品其中的焦點是一款採用無邊框設計螢幕的高端手機。 The company has at least one prototype with a larger-sized display than that of the iPhone 7 Plus (5.5-inches), but has a smaller overall size due to its nonexistent bezels. Essential is also experimenting with a touch-sensitive feature similar to iPhone’s 3D Touch, which would allow its smartphone to detect different levels of pressure when users touch the screen. The magnetic connector would allow Essential or even third parties to create hardware accessories that add features to the smartphone. For example, Rubin’s engineers are working on a sphere-shaped camera add-on that shoots high-resolution 360 degree photographs.
